The Japanese Macaque is endemic to Japan. The monkey's habitats is mainly tropical forest. However, the Japanese Macaques is unique in that it is well adapted to snowy conditions. The Shimokita Peninnsula is the northern limit of this species, as well as primates other than man. The monkeys at JIGOKUDANI in Nagano Prefecture are famouse for bathing in the hot springs. The Japanese Macaques in Yakushima Island have long, dark-gray hair, and considered a different subspecies.
