The Japanese Wood Pigeon is an uncommon, local resident in Japan. It is often found in evergreen broad‐leaved forests by the seashore, and small islands off southern Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and south through the Nansei Shoto islands to the Yaeyama Islands, and the Izu Islands to the Ogasawara and Iwojima Islands. It also occurs on small islands off the south coast of South Korea.
The photo is of the subspecies C. j. nitens (which occur on the Ogasawara and Iwojima Islands), and is almost extinct.
